Bangkok Photos

After living in Bangkok for many years I still find the streets and back sois just as intriguing and and entertaining as I did when I first arrived in this ever expanding metropolis. The following collection of Bangkok photos were taken during a period when my girlfriend lived and worked on the "other side of the river".That river being the Chao Phraya the major river in Thailand. It winds its way through the city then flows into the Gulf of Thailand.

Having a large river like this weaving through Bangkok increases the chances of capturing some interesting shots of the city. However this meager collection of Bangkok photos were shot in the small sois along which my girlfriend would walk some times to get to her job. The first two pictures show the main feed road to the small back sois.

In photo (002) the Coca Cola truck is demonstrating how easy it is to get stuck in these narrow sois hence blocking access for all other traffic.

The fourth photo (004) is taken from my TEELUK's kitchen balcony. This is obviously a photo of the neighbor's roof but demonstrates just how close together the houses are built. If you are wondering wether or not I intended the bird to be included in this photo the answer is "Yes".The next photo (005) shows more of the same without the bird. Living in confined spaces like this is easier to handle when you can see some trees nearby.

The next photo (006) demonstrates how the Thais make use of available space. The baskets and trollies are chained and padlocked to a tree. There are two reasons for this. One, to prevent the basket stack from being blown over by the wind, and two, to deter theft. The baskets, with the trollies, are used for transporting product like fruit and vegetables from the markets through the narrow sois to a vehicle parked nearby. The operators, complete with trolly and basket, hire themselves out for a small fee. This is one of the attributes of the city that I enjoy. Usually, where ever you go in Bangkok you will find a convenient service to make your daily life easy.

Next along the walk to the job is a rather deep, open and smelly storm water drain that connects up to the river.

Photo (011) I took because it was always uplifting to walk by this corner shop smothered with a variety of interesting plants.

The only "House for Rent" sign that I ever saw with in this three square kilometer area of Bangkok sois was the one in photo (013).

Photo (014) is one of the many small markets around this area. My TEERUK would buy a few fresh veggies at this market on the way home.

The lotus flower plays an important role in Thai culture. It is the most common flower to be grown in Thailand. You will find it growing in swamps, ponds, canals and of course clay vessels like the one in photo (016).Thai Buddhists when praying to Buddha use the lotus flower.

Almost every afternoon the grilled chicken vendor arrives at our front gate and stokes up her charcoal burner. Goodbye mosquitoes. We never had to go far for a tasty meal. Photo (017).
